Nigeria's Ezekwesili appointed World Bank VP

Nigeria's Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili has been appointed vice president of the World Bank for the African region.

"Oby's (Obiageli's) life is a testament to her dedication to Africa as is the high degree of respect in which she is held by the international community," the President of the World Bank Paul Wolfowitz said in a statement.

"Her passion for and commitment to Africa, high degree of integrity and optimism will bring invaluable strengths to our organization," he added.
Ezekwesili has served as special assistant to the president of Nigeria on budget monitoring, besides being one of the founding members of Transparency International, an organization established to fight corruption.

She has also served as minister of solid minerals development, and was appointed minister of education last June.

"Oby's unique blend of first-hand experiences, especially in the more challenging and complex areas of energy sector reform and education, position her as the ideal candidate to serve as the vice president for Africa," Wolfowitz noted. The World Bank lends about 4.7 billion dollars a year to African countries.

Oby is Special Assistant for Budget to the President of Nigeria. She is a leader in development and governance initiatives.

She serves on the boards of several national and international organizations committed to development, democracy, and accountability issues both in her country Nigeria and globally. She was cited in the recent publication "heroes of Democracy" for her numerous advocacy roles. Oby is a chartered accountant and management consultant.

She is presently leading the Nigeria Project for the Center for International Development of Harvard University.

She is on the Board of Directors of the New Nigeria Foundation. She is the founder and co-director of the Center for Public Policy Priorities in Nigeria. She is the former Finance Director of Transparency International.

As Managing Consultant of Katryn Benjamin Associates, she worked to build capacity in the Small and medium Scale Entrepreneurship sector in Africa. She worked previously in the financial sector as managing Director of Modern Finance, a finance and investment company, and with Akintola Williams & Co (Deloitte & Touche) in audit and consulting positions.

A graduate of both the Universities of Nigeria, Nsukka and the University of Lagos, she holds a B.Sc. in Business Education and a Master of International Law and Diplomacy degrees. In June of 2000. Oby earned her Master in Public Administration degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

In addition to being on the Board of Directors of the World Computer Exchange, Oby is also on the Board of Directors of Global Development Resources, one of the Exchange's Allied Organisations.
